There was more than just love in the air Valentine's Day at Alvernia University.

More than 750 hats were thrown in the air during half-time at the Alvernia Men's Basketball Game vs. Messiah College on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Alvernia University students teamed up with Girl Scouts to collect these brand-new hats for children fighting cancer through the organization Hats Off For Cancer.

The hats were donated by many community businesses and organizations including:

  • Boscov's Department Store
  • Bollman Hat Company
  • Mimmo's Restaurant
  • Alvernia University

Alvernia students from Jodi Radosh's COM 240 service-learning public-relations class partnered with Girl Scout Troop 1790 from Sinking Spring to put together the Hats Off at Half-Time Event and collected all the donated hats.

This event was a perfect example of how a community can come together on a day of love, Valentine's Day, to show their support for children who have cancer.

According to Girl Scout Troop leader Sharon Heck, "The children are going to appreciate it more than you know."

Hats Off for Cancer is a nonprofit organization that has been around since 1996. The organization collects hats of all kinds for children who lose their hair from their battle with cancer, and has donated more than 1 million brand-new hats worldwide.
