(art contest replicates interactive exhibition at Reading Public Museum)

July 22, 2016; Reading, PA…Reading Recreation Commission held an art design contest among City playgrounds and camps creating interactive, eight foot dinosaurs in Hollywood attire.   Each playground chose a real dinosaur species to replicate, but with a “Hollywood” twist.  Children from all the playgrounds learned about the dinosaurs prior to the start of their design project, when they visited the Reading Public Museum and the new interactive exhibit, Dinosaurs Around the World: Passport to Pangea.  The exhibit includes advanced animatronics, a multilayered narrative, fossils, authentic casts, cutting-edge research, and immersive design elements which allowed the children to learn about the geologic time scale, geology, geography, and climatology of dinosaurs and where they live.

The competition culminated in a reception held at Reading Public Museum on Thursday, July 21, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.  Daphne Klahr, Executive Director of Reading Recreation Commission acknowledged that the design completion is not only fun, but a great learning experience as well.   “This unique design and art contest encourages creativity and teamwork,” added Heather Boyer, Reading Recreation Commission Program Supervisor.

The winner of the playground banner was Hillside Playground; the winner of the dinosaur design awards “Most Original,” “ Most Creative,” and “Best Overall” was Schlegel Park Swim Camp (Ankasaurus – Lady Gaga); and “Best Display of Fossil” award went to 3rd & Spruce Playground (Bruce from Spruce).   The winning playground/camp members will get an all-expense paid trip to the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Hillside Playground members will receive a Rita’s Italian Ice party for their efforts.  The guest celebrity judges included Mayor Wally Scott, staff and directors of the Reading Public Museum, Laura Sander, a local owner/operator of McDonald’s Restaurants, the sponsor of the exhibit, and Mark Ratcliffe, development director for Habitat for Humanity.

Reading Recreation Commission and Reading Public Museum were recognized for Excellence in Recreation and Parks by the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society in March, 2015  for “The Wright Build,”  and in March 2016 for last year’s art design competition, ‘Framed: Step Into Art.”
