Berks Community Health Center To Sponsor Free HIV Testing Penn Street Location In Reading

Berks Community Health Center (BCHC) and Co-County Wellness Services are offering free HIV testing at BCHC’s  838 Penn Street location in Reading, on Friday, January 6, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Counselors from Co-County Wellness Services will be conducting the Rapid HIV test and providing counseling about the risks for HIV infection.

“Everyone should know their HIV status,” said Dr. Mary Kelleher, Chief Medical Officer at BCHC.   “Today, unlike 20 or 30 years ago, HIV infection does not necessarily lead to AIDs.  There are effective treatments available. But in order to be treated, people need to know if they have an HIV infection.  It’s a way to stay healthy and to keep your loved ones safe and healthy, too.”

Individuals wishing to be tested may walk in for the event at 838 Penn Street in Reading.  The testing and counseling are completely private and confidential.  The actual test process will take about 30 minutes, which includes the Rapid HIV test itself and time with the counselor to receive and discuss results.  Depending on turnout, there may be a wait to take the test and see a counselor.

For questions about the testing, please call Barbara Waller at Co-County Wellness Services at 610-375-6523, extension 103.
