Albright’s Smith Named MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week

Albright junior guard DeJuan Smith was named the MAC Commonwealth Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for his performance in a pair of victories.

Smith led the Lions to a 2-0 week in conference action with wins over Hood and Lebanon Valley. Smith averaged 20.5 points, six rebounds, two assists, 1.5 steals and one block per game. The junior also averaged 58 percent (14-of-24) from the field and 60 percent (3-of-5) from behind the arc.

In a 61-57 win over Hood, Smith recorded 13 points with six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. In a 70-68 win at Lebanon Valley, the junior shot 61 percent (11-of-18) from the field for 28 points and six rebounds.

The Lions are now atop the conference with a 5-0 conference record. They host second-place Lycoming on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

 MEN’S BASKETBALL (#MACmbb)

 MAC Freedom Player of the Week

Derek Leohner (FDU-Florham / So. / G / Freehold, N.J.) averaged 17.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.7 steals, two assists and a block during the week. Most impressively, Leohner tallied 19 points on 64 percent (7-of-11) shooting with seven rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist in a 71-70 win over conference foe Misericordia. Leohner recorded two of his three blocked shots in the final 28 seconds of regulation to hold on to the 71-70 win. Earlier in the week, the sophomore scored a game-high 24 points for a career-best. He shot 64 percent (9-of-14) from the field with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

  

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (#MACwbb)

 MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week

Sara Tarbert (Stevenson / Sr. / F / Delta, Pa.) earns her fourth conference weekly award of the season. Tarbert was impressive in a 1-1 week in conference play for the Mustangs. In a 69-68 road loss at No. 24 Messiah, the senior led all scorers with 37 points while shooting 15-of-22 (68 percent) from the field with 13 rebounds (12 defensive), three blocks, two assists and two steals. Tarbert also became Stevenson’s all-time leading scorer in the victory. In a 69-61 win over Lycoming, Tarbert recorded her second double-double of the week with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and three steals. Tarbert finished the week averaging 27 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, three blocks, 2.5 assists and 67 percent (22-of-33) from the field. Tarbert now has 1,415 career points in 68 games.

 MAC Freedom Player of the Week

Kendrea Williams (FDU-Florham / Fr. / G / Piscataway, N.J.) led the Devils to a 2-0 week in conference play while averaging 21 points, four rebounds and shooting 59 percent (16-of-27) from the field. Williams was the leading scorer in both conference wins. The freshman recorded 19 points on 8-of-14 (57 percent) shooting and four rebounds in an 87-58 win over Wilkes. Williams then scored 23 points on 8-of-13 (62 percent) shooting with four rebounds and three assists in a 74-55 win over Misericordia.

  

SWIMMING (#MACswim)

 MAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Ian Gaynor (Widener / Sr. / Donegal, Ireland) earns his fourth conference weekly award of the season. Gaynor factored in three first-place finishes to lead Widener to a 132-56 dual meet victory over Baldwin Wallace in Florida over the weekend. The senior won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 47.31 seconds. Gaynor also anchored the first-place 200-yard medley relay team which clocked in at 1:40.58, and then swam leadoff leg for the 200-yard freestyle relay team that came in first place in a time of 1:27.47. They won the 200-yard freestyle relay by 10 full seconds.

 MAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week

Melaney Heald (Widener / Sr. / Georgetown, Del.) helped the Pride defeated Baldwin Wallace in Florida by a score of 121-67 by factoring into three first-place finishes. Heald won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:01.36 and the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:05.50. The senior also swam leadoff leg for the 200-yard freestyle relay winning time that won by five seconds in a time of 1:44.85.

  

WRESTLING (#MACwrestle)

 MAC Wrestler of the Week

Tim Ambacher (Delaware Valley / Jr. / Newtown, Pa.) earns his second conference weekly award of the season. Ambacher, who ranks fourth in Division III at 141 lbs., went 4-0 at the North/South Duals. The junior’s most impressive win was over the No. 1 Division III 141 lbs. wrestler and 2015 133 lbs. national champion Matthew Grossmann of No. 16 Wilkes. Amacher trailed 3-1 before an escape, takedown and four-point near fall led the way to a 9-5 victory. He also had two decisions and a major decision on the day to remain undefeated against Division III wrestlers and 18-3 overall.
