Call For Artists: Berks Arts Council’s The Art of Jazz 2017

Winners to be chosen by graphic artist, saxophonist, and composer Marion MeadowsReading, PA–Berks Arts Council announces a call for artists for the 13th annual Frank Scott Memorial Art Show: The Art of Jazz. The exhibit is open to artists in all media with work focusing on the theme “Celebrate Jazz.” The exhibit runs March 27 – April 27 in the Rolf & Renate Schmidt Gallery on the second floor of the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, 201 Washington Street, Reading. The exhibition is on view in conjunction with the 27th annual Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest, which runs March 31 – April 9, 2017.Artwork must be hand delivered to the Schmidt Gallery on Wednesday, March 22, between 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. or Thursday, March 23, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Artists Reception and Awards Presentation will be held on Sunday, April 9, at 1:30 p.m.Three cash prizes will be awarded: $500 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place. Honorable mentions may be awarded at the juror’s discretion. A People’s Choice Award winner will be named based on votes received from visitors to the exhibition throughout the awards presentation. To be eligible for awards, submissions must be original work produced after January 1, 2014.Serving as prize juror for the 2017 exhibit is internationally known saxophonist/composer and graphic artist Marion Meadows. Meadows is known for creating mixed media art comprised of his photography and graphic manipulation. His work is vibrant and expressive with a hint of nature’s social order along with a love for humanity. Meadows will perform Friday, March 31, with The New Urban Jazz Party during the 2017 Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest. Meadows’ artwork will be on display at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading throughout the fest, and he will host an artist talk Saturday, April 1. These memorial events were founded during the 2005 Berks Jazz Fest by Berks Arts Council along with local businessman and artist Jerry Holleran.The entry fee for Berks Arts Council Members is $20 for the first artwork and $5 for each additional work up to a total of three entries. The fee for non-BAC members is $25 for the first artwork and $5 for each additional work up to three entries. Entry fees are waived for high school student submissions.
