Kutztown University Community to Create Art to Promote Unity

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University Communication Design Department is coming together for a day of hope and tolerance, Creatives Care: Hate the Hate, on Friday, Feb. 17, from 1 – 5 p.m. in the Sharadin Arts Building.  This 4 hour workshop encourages students, faculty, staff and community members to come together to create posters with a message that intolerance is not tolerated and that KU truly cares about the campus and the country.  The event is free and open to the public.

When white nationalist recruitment posters were found on the campus of KU, alumna and Communication Design Professor Vicki Meloney didn’t get mad, she got creative. She offered her students extra credit to turn in one of the posters transformed into something beautiful. She told the students they could cut and collage it, fold it or use it as a canvas to transform the meaning.

The email immediately ignited the interest of some of the students who began scouring the campus looking for the posters. The email made its way to social media where there was an outpouring of interest and support. The response was so great, that it encouraged the Communication Design Department to want to do more.
