OppShop Offers Opportunities and Answered Prayers

Feb 21, 2017 • by Jami Gresh
Sheila organizes the fiction section of the OppShop’s large book selection.

After living in Virginia for over 12 years, Sheila Wiswesser moved back to her hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania. Things were different when she came back, more businesses had closed, and it was an everyday struggle to find a job. Frustrated with the lack of jobs available, Sheila recalls looking through the newspaper and pleading, “Just give me the opportunity to prove myself.” At that moment, she looked over the page and saw an ad posted by the OppShop for a Book Seller. “This has got to be a sign,” Sheila said. She joined the OppShop team the day after her interview over one year ago.It is the perfect job for someone who loves and grew up around books. Sheila enjoys her job so much that the end of the day comes too soon. She says that even if she were a millionaire, she’d still come to work every day. Meeting new people from all walks of life and hearing about how the Opportunity House helped them and listening to success stories is one of Sheila’s favorite parts about working in the OppShop. But, most importantly, knowing that “anybody of any financial background can enjoy a book” makes her proud to work there. “It’s the ultimate pay-it-forward job,” Sheila said.
