Reading, Pa. – James Duane, professor at Regent Law School and author of the bestselling You Have the Right to Remain Innocent, will present the Berks County Bar Association Lecture in Contemporary Legal Issues on Monday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m., in Albright College’s Memorial Chapel.

The lecture, “Citizens’ Rights: Dealings with Law Enforcement,” is presented through a partnership between Albright and the bar association. The event is free and open to the public.

Duane is a recognized expert on the law surrounding the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1966 Miranda ruling. He has taught at Regent Law School in Virginia since 1991 in the areas of evidence, civil procedure, trial practice and appellate advocacy. Duane has also taught at William & Mary Law School and served as a faculty associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society.

Duane has clerked for federal judges, practiced civil litigation and criminal defense, and was trial counsel for the defendants in Schenck v. Pro-Choice Network of Western New York, a case heard by the Supreme Court in 1997.

Duane has been interviewed about legal matters on television and radio, and has conducted numerous legal trainings. A YouTube video of his 2008 talk at Regent Law School – about some of the reasons why even innocent criminal suspects should never agree to answer questions from the police – has more than 5 million views.

Duane received his juris doctorate from Harvard Law School.

The Berks County Bar Association Lecture in Contemporary Legal Issues, established in 2014 and held annually at Albright College, features prominent law scholars, legal practitioners or jurists discussing topics of interest to Albright students and the community at large. The lecture series is made possible by financial support from the bar association, a nonprofit organization of nearly 650 Berks attorneys that offers its members numerous opportunities for professional development and helps deliver the services of member attorneys to the community.
