READING, Pa. – The Penn Street Market will open for the season on Thursday, June 1, 2017 starting at 10 a.m. on the north side of the 400 block of Penn Street. The market will run for 18 consecutive weeks on Thursdays through September 28, 2017. Operational hours will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Free totes will be available at the market’s Information Stand (while supplies last) to fill with fresh, local pro-duce, breads, dairy products, and other artisan crafts and goods. As in the past, market visitors are invited to buy lunch from a variety of vendors and to relax and enjoy live entertainment.

The 2017 season will offer Berks Farm Bucks, in partnership with the Friends of Reading Hospital, as well as Reading Food Bucks, in partnership with The Food Trust of Philadelphia.

The Berks Farm Bucks program, sponsored by the Friends of Reading Hospital, matches Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (S-FMNP) food assistance pro-grams. Any person using these coupons has a two-to-one purchasing increase, with a maximum of $10 per person per market day, thereby doubling the purchasing power for fresh fruits and vegetables. Berks Farm Bucks are also distributed to children who attend the P.E.A.C.H. nutrition education demonstrations at the market. Berks Farms Bucks are supported by Berks Agricultural Resource Network and can be used at every stand.

The Reading Food Bucks program, sponsored by The Food Trust of Philadelphia, matches $2 for every $5 of SNAP transactions at the Information Stand. Reading Food Bucks can be used to purchase all SNAP-eligi-ble items at the market, and have no buying limit. Funding is provided by the Food Insecurity Nutrition Incen-tive (FINI) Grant by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Free parking vouchers for the 4th & Cherry Parking Garage will be available at the Information Stand for those attending the market. Bicycle parking is available at the bike racks at the market.

Penn Street Market is a project of the Reading Downtown Improvement District.
