The Animal Rescue League of Berks County Calls Code Red Ordinance for the City of Reading

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is enacting the Code Red Ordinance for the City of Reading from 12 Noon today (July 20) until 8 pm on Friday (July 21).

In accordance with Bill # 22, an amendment added to the City Code, Chapter 141, Part 2 Animals, Section 205 Caring for Animals in 2015, any person who owns, possesses, or has custody of a dog must bring the animal inside their residence for the duration of the Code, (except for supervised and necessary bathroom breaks and exercise). Additionally, non-compliance can result in the animal being removed by an Animal Control Officer from the property and impounded at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.  Owners will have 48 hours after the Code has been lifted to pick up their animal and will be subject to applicable boarding fees.

“The predicted hot temperatures and high heat index can be life threatening to any animals left outside to fend for themselves,” stated Liz McCauley, Executive Director of the Animal Rescue League.  “We urge the city of Reading residents to bring their pets inside.”

If you witness an unsupervised dog left outside in the elements within the City of Reading, please make every effort to encourage your neighbors to bring the animal inside before calling the Animal Rescue League of Berks County at 610-587-3659.  If possible, please provide the ARL with the phone number of the person in violation of the code.  The cooperation of the City of Reading residents is greatly appreciated.

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is the only open admission shelter in Berks County accepting more than 5,500 animals annually.  The shelter runs at maximum capacity throughout the year, providing adoption programs, spay/neuter clinics, community outreach, education, animal welfare investigation, and more.  The ARL’s mission is to impact all aspects of humane treatments of animals through quality service, accommodation and education of pet owners and the community.
