Reading, Pa. – Before they help welcome the new freshman class, Albright College’s orientation leaders will be busy volunteering at nonprofit and civic organizations around Reading.

POPs (Peer Orientation Persons)–returning Albright students who lead the College’s Welcome Weekend activities and help the newcomers acclimate to campus–will conduct community service projects on Saturday, Aug. 19, and Tuesday, Aug. 22.

On Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, nine POPs leaders will work with Reading’s public works department to help weed, plant and mulch along the 400 to 500 block of Penn Street.

On Aug. 22, about 80 POPs will fan out across the city, from 1 to 5 p.m., volunteering at the following locations:

Olivet Boys and Girls Club, PAL Club, 325 Walnut St.: POPs will help paint areas of the club and ready it for the upcoming school year and programming.Greenhouse at City Park, Constitution Boulevard: POPS will help clean-up and revitalize the greenhouse.Greater Berks Food Bank, 117 Morgan Dr.: POPs will package and sort donations.

In addition, a group of POPs will remain at Albright on Aug. 22 to paint the red and white paw prints that line the streets of campus, as well as to paint curbs and help with other ground work.

“Volunteering allows our POPs to not only strengthen parts of our community, but also practice and realize the power of service, a duty integral in our understanding of citizenship and intrinsic to our identity as Albrightians,” said senior Nate Rothermel, a POPs steering committee member and summer orientation intern. “Since POPs play a major role in helping to define and uphold the core values of Albright’s community, the service projects we take on before welcoming new students into our community are made even more valuable and necessary.”

The Class of 2021 will move in on Thursday, Aug. 24.
