Gallagher Memorial Lecture to Explore Women, Religion and Politics in the 2016 Presidential Election

Sep 19, 2017 • by Albright College

Reading, Pa. – Albright College’s 16th annual James J. Gallagher Memorial Lecture will be presented by religious studies scholar Anthea Butler, Ph.D., on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m., in Klein Lecture Hall.

The lecture, “But Her Emails: Women, Religion, and Politics in the 2016 Election – Where Do We Go from Here?,” is free and open to the public.

An associate professor of religious studies and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Butler is a historian of American and African American religion. Her research and writing spans religion and politics, religion and gender, African American religion, sexuality, media, religion and popular culture.

Butler’s lecture will examine the 2016 presidential election cycle. Butler contends that the real story of this election cycle was the role of women in both parties, and the religious and social issues that drove their votes and protests in the aftermath of the election. Butler’s talk will engage with these issues and the stakes for women in the political arena during the Trump presidency.

Butler is the author of Women in the Church of God in Christ: Making a Sanctified World, and is currently completing a book project on religion, politics and evangelicals from the 2008 to the 2016 election. A sought-aftermedia commentator, her op-eds on contemporary politics, religion and race have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian.

The annual Gallagher Memorial Lecture is made possible by L. Gene Gatter and the Gatter Foundation and was created to honor the late James J. Gallagher Jr., Albright Class of 1950. Gallagher taught at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and was professor and chairman of Drexel University’s law department until his death in 1977. The series is designed to bring outstanding scholars in the field of religious studies to Albright.
