Red Cross brings Holiday cheer for Veterans with the Holiday Gift Baskets program

In collaboration with partners, Red Cross distributes 300 baskets to veterans

READING, PA — The holiday season is here and the American Red Cross wants to help show gratitude to those who served in our Armed Forces. Our veterans have made an incredible sacrifice for our country.

Red Cross volunteers in Berks County take pride in helping our local veterans. For over 30 years, the  American Red Cross in Berks County has coordinated a Veterans Holiday Basket Program. This year alone, 300 holiday baskets were prepared and distributed to local men and women who have served in the Armed Forces.

Baskets include a choice of a frozen ham or turkey and all the accompaniments for a holiday feast: boxed potatoes, rice, gravy, applesauce, canned vegetables, as well as candy, cookies and other desserts. For the veterans who have pets, the holiday basket includes food and treats for their furry companions. Several organizations in the community help to provide this holiday comfort, including:

The Red Cross in Berks County has a very special relationship with local veterans. For over 30 years, Red Cross has run a transportation program in which volunteers drive veterans to the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Hospital for their health appointments. The program runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to around noon. All veterans who take advantage of this service are eligible for a holiday basket.

The Red Cross is committed to remember and honor those who have fought on the country’s behalf. These veteran services are essential to the American Red Cross mission and the transportation and holiday gift basket program are our way to continue that work.
