Alvernia’s Briner and Malik Named MAC Conference Players of the Week

ANNVILLE, Pa. – For the second week in a row Alvernia University Baseball claimed both honors for the MAC Commonwealth Players of the Week. Junior Matt Briner was named Player of the Week and sophomore Thomas Malik was named Pitcher of the Week.

 Briner (Media, Pa.) led the No. 28 Golden Wolves to a 2-2 week, including a 2-1 conference series win over Hood last week. Briner finished the week hitting .429 (6-for-14). In the doubleheader sweep of Hood, the junior went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored, two walks and a stolen base. In game two of the series, Briner scored the only run of the game in a 1-0 win while batting 1-for-2 with a walk. In game three, the junior went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a run scored, a double and a walk.

 Malik (Millstone Township, N.J.) came up huge in a big spot for No. 28 Alvernia throwing 6.2 shutout innings in a 1-0 win at Hood. Malik scattered four hits, struck out five batters and walked just two while holding the Blazers to a .174 batting average.
