Local Couple Recognized for Gift to Reading Hospital Emergency Department

WEST READING, Pa. – A new dedication plaque in memory of Jennie and Constantine “Gus” Kratsas, recognizing their contributions to support children and families in the community, has been installed in the Emergency Department Pediatric Waiting Room at Reading Hospital.

Reading Hospital received a $60,000 grant – made in the Kratsas’ names – from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia region and the National Ronald McDonald House Charities Organization. It resulted from funds raised from concession sales at the First Union Betsy King Classic LPGA golf tournament held at the Berkleigh Country Club in Kutztown. Facilitators of the grant include McDonald franchise owner Diane Kratsas Skyllas, daughter of Gus and Jennie; George Skyllas; Betsy King; Joanne Heller; Herb Lotman and many volunteers and Berks County students.

The grant was used to renovate the pediatric waiting room, install two Touch2Play Pro online game and activity systems, and provide books and other materials for children and their families visiting the emergency department waiting room.

Gus and Jennie Kratsas, former owners of several McDonald franchises in Berks and Schuylkill Counties from 1968-1995, were well-known for supporting children and community events in the Reading region.
