Wyomissing, PA – Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex and Reading United AC invite soccer fanatics of all ages to play in Berks County’s first true Futsal League beginning June 2. Modeled after the world-famous Brazilian game, the league will be played on Body Zone’s back parking lot, on a full-sized field, in teams of 5v5. Participants do not need any previous Futsal experience, and are encouraged to experience the game and learn the basic skills in a fun, safe environment.

Body Zone and Reading United developed the league using the parameters of the original form of Futsal in order to bring not only the techniques, but also the culture of the sport to our community. The league is accepting teams in the following age groups: Adults (Men’s Open, Men’s Recreational and Co-Ed), U13/U14 (2004/2003 birth years), U11/U12 (2006/2005 birth years) and U9/U10 (2008/2007 birth years).

Reading United players owe their skills to the sport of Futsal. Pedro Ribeiro, a Brazilian footballer who currently plays for Fresno FC in the United Soccer League, says, “I started training at just five years old, and Futsal was extremely important in my development as a player. It helped me improve skills such as decision making, quick feet, movement off the ball, finishing, etc.” Pedro Ribeiro finished his college career at Coastal Carolina with 31 goals and 26 assists, and led the Chanticleers to a 69-20-4 overall record.

Lucas Baldin moved to the United States to play college soccer at the University of South Florida, and is now a player for ACD Lara in the Venezuelan Primera Division. Lucas says, “Futsal will always be where I fell in love with soccer. I hear people talk about how great the Brazilians are at soccer and I truly believe it is because of Futsal. In Futsal you learn to think quickly and react faster than your opponent.”

Colin Kent, director of soccer for Body Zone, and director of youth coaching for Reading United AC, is thrilled to partner with Body Zone to bring the sport alive. “Brazil has been responsible for producing some of the best players to ever play the game of soccer; Pete, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Neymar just to name a few. The Brazilian style of play and their obvious love for the game stems from playing Futsal as children,” he says. “Bringing a real Futsal League to Berks County has been a mission of mine for a few years. I want players to experience the fun and excitement that playing the sport brings. Players will get more touches on the ball, and this type of game format encourages players to be more creative with their skills.”
