Tower Health Launches Social Media-Based Nutrition Challenge

Eating fruits and vegetables has never been more beneficial for the communities of Berks, Montgomery, and Chester counties. On Wednesday, August 1, Tower Health begins a new wellness campaign, #TowerGimmeFive, aimed at promoting the benefits of healthy eating and donating to food banks in all three counties.

Participants are challenged to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables per day for five days. Once they have completed this, they can create a video through the Boomerang app to post on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, using the hashtag #TowerGimmeFive and tagging five more people to participate in the challenge.

There are many health benefits associated with eating more fruits and vegetables on a daily basis-such as helping to better control or reduce risk of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia-but from August 1 until October 31, the benefits don’t stop there. For every video posted to #TowerGimmeFive representing a successful completion of the challenge, Tower Health will donate $1 to food banks in Berks, Montgomery, and Chester counties, up to a maximum of $30,000.

Prizes will also be awarded to randomly selected participants in the form of grocery store gift cards. Five $500 gift cards, 10 $250 gift cards, and 50 $100 gift cards will be distributed to winners, who can choose among GIANT Food Stores, Redner’s Market, Weis Markets, Aldi, Wegman’s, or Trader Joe’s for their prize. Each person is only eligible for one prize, but everyone is free to complete the challenge multiple times. Making a new social media post for each successful five days increases both the amount of money donated to food banks and an individual’s chances of winning a prize.

Tower Health is offering a series of cooking classes to the community to encourage the consumption of fruits and vegetables. There will be a College Bound/Dorm Cooking lesson on Friday, August 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; a Girls Night Out on Friday, August 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a Couples Night Out on Friday, September 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and a Family-Friendly Afternoon on Saturday, September 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
