WEST LAWN, PA – For Samarah Joacchim, a 7th-grader in Haiti, school means life and hope for a future. But not just because of the education she will get there. For Samarah and millions of children around the world, attending school also means she will eat that day.

“Without food I would be starving and my grades would be lower. Most of us rely on the food served at school to survive; this is the only meal we get for the day. I hope the feeding program will continue.”

More than 40 percent of Rise Against Hunger’s meals are distributed to school feeding programs around the world. Those meals encourage school attendance and help put these children and their families on a path out of poverty.

On Sunday, September 9, West Lawn United Methodist Church will package 15,200 meals with Rise Against Hunger. With over 75 servants participating, ranging in age from toddlers to senior citizens, the West Lawn congregation will help make sure children get the nutritious meals they need to grow and succeed at this meal packaging event.

According to their website, “Rise Against Hunger’s meal packaging program is a volunteer-based initiative that coordinates the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. The program was created to give dedicated individuals and organizations — from businesses to civic clubs — the opportunity to participate in a hands-on international hunger relief program and to become educated, engaged advocates for the world’s hungry. The events also give volunteers hands-on experience in leadership development, team-building, relationship-building, creative problem-solving, and goal-setting and achievement.” www.riseagainsthunger.org

In assembly line fashion, in its Community Center building located at 101 Woodside Ave., West Lawn, PA, the volunteers will assemble, weigh, package and label the non perishable food bags starting at 6:00 PM. From West Lawn congregation’s hands to less fortunate tummies around the world, these volunteers are on mission to help end world hunger.
