His visit is part of his Fifty-Fifty tour, during which he will perform at least once in each of the 50 states. KU is Brown’s only stop in Pennsylvania. During his visit, Brown will provide an open master class and performance, both of which are free and open the public. The schedule is as follows:

Thursday, November 1st:

Open Masterclass: 4:30 PM Schaeffer Little Theatre, Room 1G

Performance: 7:30 PM Schaeffer Little Theatre, Room 1G

Derek Brown, Beatboxing Saxophonist

“Brown performs unaccompanied solos that occasionally make one recall Bobby McFerrin in his early prime and the great saxophonist Eddie Harris . . . utilizing slap-tonguing, circular breathing, a wide interest in musical styles and dazzling coordination to create rather unique music,” Scott Yanow, jazz journalist and historian, said.

Derek’s latest project is an epic undertaking. His Fifty-Fifty Tour is taking him all over the country, as he is performing in each of the 50 states in a nine-month span. Traveling from state-to-state in an RV with his wife, Rachel, they will be regularly ‘vlogging’ and posting about music and life on the road. Follow them at www.FiftyFiftyTour.com.

Previously the director of jazz studies at Abilene Christian University for six years, Brown now lives and performs in Chicago, undertaking projects with various bands around the area and throughout the world. His recent “BEATBoX SAX” music videos and tutorials on YouTube have been very popular among saxophonists and music lovers alike, leading to endorsements with Legere, JodyJazz, P.Mauriat, BG and AKG. He has performed solo concerts throughout China, Russia, Japan, Germany, France, Poland, the UK, Norway, Finland, Malaysia, Latvia, Serbia, Israel, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Brazil and Dubai, as well as throughout the U.S.

Brown received his Bachelor of Music in Performance (Classical and Jazz) from Hope College in 2006 and his Master of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music in 2008.

Crossing genres from jazz to classical to funk, without looping or electronic effects, saxophone innovator Derek Brown’s unique playing style must be seen to be believed!
