Getting ‘Autumn Ready’ With Pick Your Own Orchards

Ontelaunee Orchards

Fall holds two holidays within it; Halloween and Thanksgiving. Pumpkin carving, costumes, parades, candy, corn stalks, corn mazes, hay rides, and haunted houses transform into a family around the dinner table giving thanks with loads of food and of course yummy pumpkin pie!

A fun activity for the whole family before we celebrate these holidays is to visit a local orchard. There are countless orchards local to the Berks County area including; Brecknock Orchards in Brecknock, Oley Turnpike Dairy in Oley, Flinchbaugh’s Orchard and Farm Market in York, and Weavers Orchard in Morgantown, but my family favorite is Ontelaunee Orchards in Leesport. My family goes here every year since I was 8 and I am now 20 years old. Our family members gather together for this pick-our-own in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, and it’s definitely a nice way to catch up and enjoy your family before the holidays.

Ontelaunee Orchards has been around since 1917. It has been a pick your own orchard for nearly 90 years. Each season they harvest different fruits prime to that season. In the fall the harvested fruit is often apples and peaches. Due to the holidays in the fall season they harvest pumpkins of all sizes and even unique gourds. They have farm land surrounding the orchard so cornstalks are able to be purchased as well for those who love them as decorations or use the corn for a nice center piece at Thanksgiving.

Ontelaunee Orchards is a perfect place for people of all ages since they don’t do anything scary, the orchard is more of a family oriented setting. They do hayrides, corn mazes, taste sampling of their food and drinks (my favorite is their apple cider and peach pie!), they showcase how they make the food and drinks supplied there and the steps along the way beginning with picking the right fruit for the job.

“Ontelaunee Orchards offers a number of fruit related services. Our growing season goes from June 1-October 31, beginning with the different berries; strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, then goes to cherries, peaches and apples” says Ontelaunee Orchards’ owner. All year around, all seasons, Ontelaunee Orchards is open to the public. Ontelaunee Orchards in located at 5524 Pottsville Pike, Leesport, PA 19533. Contacting them is very easy through their website: http://www.twin-o.com/contact.html, and their main number is 610-926-2187. Anyone is free to come in person during their usual business hours 10a-5p. So what are you waiting for? Get your autumn on today at your local orchard!
