Do you want to stay connected with your community? Do you want to have a great time, relaxing listening to great “pops” music? While Berks is loaded with events and activities for the local community, one of the best events in Berks County is the Reading Pops orchestra.
The Reading Pops is a nonprofit organization, fully devoted to giving back to Berks County. Being a college student in the Reading area and living in the Reading area my entire life, I was introduced to the Reading Pops at a young age and it has been with me throughout my life, and has been a great way to stay active and interact with my community. Being such a small organization, not many are aware of this local attraction, I would like to provide some insight and awareness about the Reading Pops.
Conducted by Dr. Willis M. Rapp, The Reading Pops is a 55 piece orchestra that covers some of the most well-known music in the “pops” genre. They preform all over the Berks County area, and during community events. The mission of the Pops is to promote the musical arts in Reading and Berks county through the preservation of a professional orchestra for the performance of public concerts, and to provide a variety of historical and educational presentations of the classic pops repertoire, exposing the greater community to different musical art forms.
While still a relatively small group, the musicians at the Reading Pops are extremely talented and are extremely dedicated to their craft. After a recent concert, I interviewed Donna Kissinger, a lifetime local in the Reading area, and she told me, “The Reading Pops was one of my favorite events I attended in the area in a long time.” She also said, “It was extremely family friendly, and was very relaxing, and a great way to end my weekend.” The pops are also involved in one of the biggest jazz fests in the country, the Berks Jazz Fest.
Carol Aulenbach from Reading says “Excellent ensemble of musicians! Love the varied repertoire.” That’s one of the major calling cards of the Reading Pops. The pops are extremely versatile and don’t stick to one genre, and instead they play the “pops” that everyone, of all ages know, recognize and love.
