RACC Announces 2019 Berks County Poet Laureate Competitions

Reading, PA -­ Reading Area Community College (RACC) is proud to announce the Fourth Berks Scholastic Poet Laureate and Eighth Berks County Poet Laureate Competitions are now open and taking submissions at RACC’s website:   racc.edu/poetry. Deadline to enter is March 31, 2019 and the winners will be announced at the Berks County Poet Laureate Celebration on May 1st, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at the Miller Center for the Arts.

The Berks County Poet Laureate Competition, held every two years, has been aligned with Berks Bards, an established local poetry group. BardFest is a series of poetry readings throughout the month of April in celebration of National Poetry Month.

A $500.00 honorarium will be awarded to the winner of the Berks County Poet Laureate competition and a $200 honorarium will be awarded to the winner of Berks Scholastic Poet Laureate competition.

The Berks County Poet Laureate and Berks County Scholastic Poet Laureate must be Berks County residents. The Berks Scholastic Poet Laureate must be a student attending a Berks County high school. The Seventh Poet Laureate is Sandra Fees, with past Berks County Poet Laureates including Nancy Yeager, Maria McDonnell, Craig Czury, and Heather Thomas. The Third Berks County Scholastic Poet Laureate is Samantha Gurnavage, a graduate of Wilson High School. Alexandra Papoutsis, a graduate of Wilson High School, and Sian Carter, a graduate of Governor Mifflin held the role formerly.

Local poets will judge the semi-finalists and a poet of national merit will judge the finalists. Contest rules and entry forms are available through Reading Area Community College’s website: racc.edu/poetry
