Reading, PA – Albright College’s Freedman Gallery will feature “Legacy, a Faculty & Alumni Showcase,” Feb. 21- April 14, in honor of the more than 30-year career of artist and educator Richard Hamwi, Ph.D. A closing reception will be held Sun., April 14, from 1-4 p.m.

The spring exhibit celebrates Hamwi’s impact on drawing, watercolor and design students by pairing his recent work alongside the work of three alumni: Adrienne Marie (Lastoskie) Brendlinger, Raymond A. Reyes and Madison VanDuren.

A professor of art at Albright since 2004, Hamwi has given more than 30 solo exhibits in galleries and museums in New York City, Washington, D.C., and State College, Pa. His work is included in several permanent collections such as the National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution, the Phillips Collection and the Italian Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Lifetime Reading, Pa., resident, Raymond Reyes, graduated from Albright in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in digital studio art. A freelance illustrator and designer, Reyes uses anamorphic abstract shapes and explosive color to display interesting compositions within his paintings and illustrations.

Adrienne Brendlinger, also a Berks county native, earned a Bachelor of Arts in art education from Albright in 2007 and a Master of Science in special education from Drexel University in 2015. As an educator, she has taught art in public, private and alternative school settings, as well as juvenile therapeutic facilities and summer camps. For the last eight years, she has been stationed at two Brandywine School District (Wilmington, Del.) elementary schools. She earned one a Teacher of the Year award from Forwood Elementary in 2017 and a Delaware Art Teacher of the Year award in 2018.

The newest graduate in the trio, Madison VanDuren finished her co-major degree in studio art and arts administration in 2018. She cites independent study with Hamwi as one of her most impactful artistic influences. “Dr. Hamwi inspired my love for watercolor which continues to keep me invested and enthused about art and its endless potential,” she said.

“Legacy, a Faculty & Alumni Showcase” will be on display through April 14 in the Freedman Gallery’s Project Space.
