Meet Mady Johnston – Social Media Coordinator

Q: Hometown/education

A: I’m from Reading, PA, born and raised. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Alvernia University in May 2018 with a B.A. in Communications, focusing in Film, Culture, and Creative Arts. I also minored in Women and Gender Studies.

Q: Why did you decide to join BCTV?

A: During my time in school and still to this day, I have been passionate about creating and inspiring an informed community through dialogue and media relationships with consumers. BCTV is a local, community-focused news source that has shared this same passion for decades. When I learned about the opportunity to join the BCTV team, I didn’t hesitate to apply and am more than happy for doing so.

Q: Why are you passionate about this occupation?

A: We now live in a global society that relies on social media for almost everything, from communicating with loved ones to receiving news updates to killing time by watching viral videos. We also live in a time when demand for national news media is high but public trust in said media accuracy is low. Meanwhile, small, local media often falls through the cracks and is either lost or ignored. I want to help change this. As Social Media Coordinator, it is my job to maintain, if not strengthen and expand, healthy dialogue and trusting relationships between BCTV and Berks County citizens, like myself.

Q: Other personal interests?

A: My biggest personal passion is music. I used to be active in the local open mic scene, though it has since diminished. I am constantly expanding my CD and vinyl collections. Beyond that, I enjoy taking long walks around town and taking time for myself when I’m not working or spending time with friends and family.

Meet Matt Heffner – Technician

Q: Hometown/education

A: Shillington, PA. Graduate of Governor Mifflin. Sophomore at Kutztown University.

Q: Why did you decide to join BCTV?

A: BCTV has continuously been a great resource for building experience in the fields of media. Taking the opportunity that they provide, I joined BCTV as a volunteer in the winter of 2017. The rest is history.

Q: Why are you passionate about this occupation?

A: Television has a very unique spot in the world of occupations that few other fields do.  From BCTV to NBC there exists a balance between the importance of what we do and the creative expression of how we do it.  Whether it’s education, storytelling, or anywhere in between, being able to reach out and effect the people around you is all the more rewarding when you can do so in a way that is unique to you.  I strongly believe television provides this.

Q: Other personal interests?

A: I consider myself a milkshake enthusiast and a mini golf aficionado.
