Laureldale, PA – May is dedicated to health and wellness at Muhlenberg Community Library (MCL). The month kicks off with the library’s Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday May 4th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Admission to the event is free. If that is not incentive enough to attend, the library has received a grant from The Friends of Berks County Public Libraries Fund of Berks County Community Foundation to reward the first twelve adults attending any of the three workshops during the day with a $5 Redner’s gift card. The workshops include Hip Hop Dance with Branches of Dance at 10:00, Nutrition and Make your Own Salad in a Jar with Board Certified Nurse Coach from Wellness Potential Sherri Mathews at noon and Self Defense with BOKA Combat Systems at 1:00PM.
Workshops not your thing? That’s okay. The fair will have something for everyone. Kids will enjoy seeing a Goodwill Fire Company fire truck and talking to the firefighters, meeting an EMT and seeing a Muhlenberg Area Ambulance Association ambulance, reading a book to therapy dog Chelsea, running Cub Scout Pack 124’s obstacle course, discovering the joys of Hip Hop and learning some self-defense moves. Adults of all ages may walk around and visit over fifteen vendors who will have information for mind, body and soul. Some of the vendors include MCL’s Teen Advisory Board with activities for the mind and emotional well-being, ARL’s Patriotic Paws Program, Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex, Just Breathe Birth and Beyond, U3 Body, Mind & Spirit Holistic Health Care Center and Young Living Essential Oils.
A highlight of the fair will be Reading Hospital Tower Health’s Distracted Driving Simulator that adults can try to experience the dangers of driving while impaired or distracted. The Miller Keystone Blood Center will be on hand also for appointments and walk-ins to donate blood. At 11:00 AM State Representative Mark Rozzi will cut the ribbon on the library’s newly renovated all purpose room. The renovations were financed by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development Keystone Communities Program. After the dedication, Rep. Rozzi will discuss how state government can assist with health concerns. A schedule of all the presenters and activities can be found on the library’s Facebook page and website. The Friends of Berks County Public Libraries Fund of Berks County Community Foundation is a funding source for this event.
Community libraries are about more than just books. As a community partner, social hub and service provider, libraries offer much more than just the best reads around. Health Literacy is one of the five PA Literacies emphasized by libraries in PA. MCL has connected with community organizations to address health literacy for adults and children at its second Health and Wellness Fair and encourages the community to “Be well with MCL!”
About MCL–The mission of the Muhlenberg Community Library is to promote lifelong learning opportunities by offering free library services to all who seek to change, improve, enrich and enjoy their lives.
