Climb Out Of The Darkness Walk

READING, PA. April 16, 2019  May is Mental Health Awareness monthBerks Counseling Center invites you to participate in our first “Climb Out of the Darkness” walk to be held May 14th at 7:45am.  We will gather at the entrance at 645 Penn Street and walk around the block in support of all those who suffer from mental illness in silence and pain. Family member, co-worker or a neighbor; everyone is invited to walk.  Good mental health is essential to everyone’s overall health and well-being, and mental illnesses are common and treatable.

Mental Health Disorders are common in the United States.  One in five Americans suffers from a diagnosable mental illness every year.  In fact, mental illnesses are the leading cause of disability in the U.S.  Even more shocking is the fact that 80% of Americans with a treatable mental disorder do not receive proper diagnosis and effective treatment – because they don’t understand they have an illness and don’t know what to do or where to turn for help.  The STIGMA is too great.  It may be in the form of insensitive remarks, imposing questions or social shunning.  We never run away from someone suffering a heart attack but what about someone suffering a panic attack?  The typical reaction experienced by someone living with mental illness is fear and rejection.

Berks Counseling Center and the dedicated employees work tirelessly to assist those who suffer from the debilitating effects of mental illness.   Bringing awareness to mental health through this simple walk will help lessen the stigma associated with the disorder and hopefully, encourage those that need help to reach out.  Please help BCC make this possible by bringing awareness to your readers and then, join us on May 14th and bring your family and friends!  To sweeten the deal, Dunkin Donuts’ is providing refreshments and a tasty treat for all after the walk!

Berks Counseling Center (BCC) is a recovery oriented Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC) with an integrated behavioral and physical health model of service delivery.
