Melahn, DeLucas Lead Softball All-Conference Selections

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Freshman Allison Melahn was named MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year, head coach Marguerite DeLucas was named Coach of the Year and five Albright softball players received all-conference honors as announced by the league office on May 1.

Melahn and junior Camille Sears earned first team honors, senior catcher Stephanie Pomante and junior outfielder Brooke Yerger received second team honors, while junior outfield Jessica Rodriguez was named to the honorable mention team.

DeLucas guided the Lions to the program’s first playoff berth since 2007 and a program-record 12-game winning streak.

Melahn is 15-4 with a 2.91 ERA in 22 appearances (18 starts) for the Lions this season and is the first player in program history to be named Rookie of the Year. The Gilbertsville, Pa., native leads the MAC Commonwealth in wins (15) and has turned in 13 complete games. Melahn was named MAC Commonwealth Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 15-21 after helping Albright clinch a postseason berth with a pair of complete games in a sweep of Lebanon Valley.

Sears hit .420 with three home runs and 37 RBI in 36 games this season for the Lions and tallied all-conference honors at the designated player position. This marks the second straight year that Sears has gotten an all-conference nod after earning a spot on the Honorable Mention team at Utility in 2018. The junior ranks second in the conference in RBI (37), fifth in batting average (.420) and seventh in hits (50) and her 50 hits broke the previous-single season program record of 49. Sears registered 15 multi-hit games and drove in three runs or more on six different occasions.

Pomante hit .380 with 11 doubles, 18 RBI and 15 runs scored in 38 games for Albright and her 11 doubles are tied for second in the MAC Commonwealth. She finished the regular season on a tear as she hit .458 (11-24) with four doubles, eight RBI and three runs scored in her final seven games and registered a trio of three-hit games during that stretch.

Yerger is the reigning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week and hit .392 with a team-leading 51 hits, 18 stolen bases and 30 runs scored in 37 starts for the Lions. The junior’s 51 hits also broke the afore-mentioned previous single season program record of 49. Yerger was named Player of the Week after hitting .476 (10-21) with six RBI, five stolen bases and five runs scored in six games last week for Albright.

Rodriguez earned All-Conference honors in the outfield for the second consecutive year after hitting .367 with eight doubles, 11 RBI, 27 runs scored and a team-leading 28 walks in 38 games. The Simi Valley, Calif., native reached base safely in 36 of her 38 games this season and has scored a run in 10 consecutive games.

The No. 2 seed Lions will open the MAC Commonwealth Tournament on Friday, May 3 against No. 3 seed Alvernia. First pitch from Messiah’s Starry Softball Complex is set for 12 p.m.
