Sides Earns Player of the Year Honors
Annville, Pa. (May 2, 2019) – Alvernia University Baseball senior Nathan Sides was named MAC Commonwealth Baseball Player of the Year and First Team All-MAC Commonwealth, and five other student-athletes were named to the All-MAC Commonwealth Baseball Team, as announced by the Middle Atlantic Conference on May 2.
Sides earned First-Team honors as a shortstop. Joining Sides with First Team All-MAC Commonwealth honors are Matt Briner at first base, and Mike Cirilli at second base. Alex Salesky picked up Second Team honors as a catcher. Nick Nutile earned All-MAC Commonwealth Honorable Mention as a designated hitter, and Ian Shaffer rounded out Alvernia’s honorees as an Honorable Mention utility player.
This is the second time in his career that Sides, a senior, has been named the MAC Commonwealth Baseball Player of the Year. He also earned the honor in 2017, and was the Rookie of the Year in 2016. He has now earned First Team All- MAC Commonwealth honors all four years of his collegiate career.
Sides, a shortstop, is having a historic season for the Golden Wolves. He is batting .485 on the season with an NCAA Division III leading 80 hits. He also has 14 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 47 RBIs, and 56 runs scored. Sides is leading the MAC Commonwealth in batting average, hits, runs scored, and RBIs. He is second in the conference in doubles and triples. Sides became the all-time hits leader for Alvernia earlier this season and currently stands at 272 career hits. Sides also sits atop the record book in all-time triples and all-time at bats. In the field, Sides .966 fielding percentage on the season with 71 putouts and 98 assists. Sides also earned MAC Commonwealth Baseball Player of the Week three times this season.
Briner earns All-MAC Commonwealth honors for the third time in his career, and is First Team for the first time. Briner was Second Team in 2018, and was Honorable Mention in 2017. Briner is batting .397 in 21 games played. He has 27 hits, including five doubles and a homerun, 20 RBIs, and 13 runs scored. In the field, Briner has a .993 fielding percentage with just one error and 142 putouts.
Cirilli, a junior, earns All-MAC Commonwealth honors for the second time in his career. This is his first time making First-Team All-Conference. He was All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2017. Cirilli is batting .342 on the year with 51 hits, six doubles, two triples, and three home runs. He has driven in 35 runs and scored 40 more. Cirilli has a .961 fielding percentage with 97 putouts and 101 assists.
Salesky, a senior, earns All-MAC Commonwealth honors for the second straight year. Salesky was named the First-Team All-MAC Commonwealth catcher in 2018. Salesky is batting .296 on the season. He has 37 hits, including 12 doubles, three triples, and two home runs. He also has 21 RBI and 22 runs scored. Salesky leads the MAC Commonwealth with 19 caught stealing bys, which is ten more than Jordan Moore of Stevenson who finished second in the MAC Commonwealth with nine. Salesky broke the caught stealing by Alvernia record in the final series of the regular season. Salesky has 201 putouts on the season with 48 assists.
Nick Nutile, a freshman, earns his first career All-MAC Commonwealth selection as an Honorable Mention designated hitter. Over 24 games, Nutile has posted a .392 batting average. He has 20 hits, with a double, a triple, and a home run. He has also driven in 13 runs while scoring nine times.
Ian Shaffer, a senior, earns honorable mention as a utility player. Shaffer has split time this year in the infield, outfield, and as a designated hitter. Shaffer has a .346 batting average with 46 hits. He has 13 doubles and two triples on the season, and is leading the MAC Commonwealth with eight home runs. Shaffer has driven in 28 runs and has scored 49 times. In the field, Shaffer has 43 putouts and 30 assists on the season.
Nate Luscombe, a senior out of Hood, earned Pitcher of the Year honors, while Jarod Bingaman of Messiah was named Rookie of the Year. Michael Impellittiere of Hood was named the MAC Commonwealth Coach of the Year.
Alvernia finished the regular season with a 25-13-2 overall record, and was 15-6 in MAC Commonwealth play. The Golden Wolves are the second seed heading into the MAC Commonwealth tournament, which starts today at PeoplesBank Park in York, Pa. Alvernia will take on #3 Arcadia in game two of the tournament, which is slated for a 7:00 PM start this evening.
