A powerful group of students at Southern Middle School in Reading is working toward improving bathroom culture and access to feminine hygiene products in schools around Berks County.
The all-girl group is part of the Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading, which is hosted locally by VOiCEup Berks, a fund of Berks County Community Foundation.
The project — which they call “Girls Supporting Girls. Period.” — is:
- Getting fellow students to pledge to respect and care for school bathrooms.
- Researching the adverse impact that lack of access to feminine products has on girls in school, as well as other detrimental aspects of “menstrual inequity.”
- Lobbying policymakers and administrators at area schools to increase student access to hygiene products.
Collecting donations of feminine hygiene products for fellow students and for local women’s shelters.
