Teens in Reading: “Girls supporting girls. Period.”

from Berks County Community Foundation

May 15, 2019

A powerful group of students at Southern Middle School in Reading is working toward improving bathroom culture and access to feminine hygiene products in schools around Berks County.

The all-girl group is part of the Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading, which is hosted locally by VOiCEup Berks, a fund of Berks County Community Foundation.

The project — which they call “Girls Supporting Girls. Period.” — is:

  1. Getting fellow students to pledge to respect and care for school bathrooms.
  2. Researching the adverse impact that lack of access to feminine products has on girls in school, as well as other detrimental aspects of “menstrual inequity.”
  3. Lobbying policymakers and administrators at area schools to increase student access to hygiene products.

Collecting donations of feminine hygiene products for fellow students and for local women’s shelters.
