by UGI Utilities, Inc.

Jun 21, 2019

UGI Utilities, Inc. will begin a natural gas main replacement project in the City of Reading on N 5th Street beginning the week of July 1. This project is part of the Company’s multi-year infrastructure betterment initiative.

The natural gas main replacement project will take place on N 5th Street from the 500 block through the 1300 block. A number of intersecting streets will also be affected by this project. More than 5,200 feet of non-contemporary main will be replaced.

Two crews will work on this project simultaneously. One crew will begin at the intersection of 6th and Greenwich Streets and work toward N 5th Street. This crew will complete the work from the 500 block to the 900 block of N 5th Street, working north toward the intersection of N 5th Street and Spring Street.

The second crew, which will complete the work from the 1000 block to the 1300 block of N 5th Street, will begin work between Pike Street and Perry Street and move south toward the intersection of N 5th Street and Spring Street.

This project will also renew gas service lines to approximately 150 homes and businesses.

During construction, blocks on affected streets may be restricted to one lane of traffic.

Parking also will be restricted on those blocks during construction hours. Flaggers will direct traffic during construction. Construction hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

“UGI recognizes area residents will be inconvenienced during this project. We will work to complete construction in a timely manner,” Tim Angstadt, Vice President of Operations, said. “This project is part of UGI’s continuing commitment to provide safe and reliable natural gas service to our customers and our communities. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we make this long-term system improvement. We also thank officials from Reading and PennDOT for their cooperation and assistance in the planning and execution of this project.”

UGI Utilities will spend more than $187.5 million in fiscal year 2019 to replace approximately 64 miles of natural gas mains and complete a variety of system enhancement projects.
