West Reading, Pa. – Participation in the second annual Berks Trail Challenge, an initiative that encourages residents to explore local walking trails, has nearly doubled. Currently, 680 individuals are registered to participate while at the same time last year 368 participants were registered. This year’s participants range in age from five months to 74 years old and represent the majority of Berks County communities including, Wyomissing, Reading, Hamburg, Kutztown, Birdsboro, and many more. Registration is still available and individuals are encouraged to participate.

“Participating in the Berks Trail Challenge is a great way to incorporate physical activity into your personal, or family, health and wellness routine,” said William M. Jennings, Reading Hospital President and CEO. “This initiative builds on our promise of ‘Advancing Health. Transforming Lives.’ while encouraging our community members to explore the beautiful parks and trails in our area.”

The Berks Trail Challenge, presented by Be Well Berks, an initiative of the Community Wellness Department of Reading Hospital, began on May 6 and will continue through October 31. Participants can register here and print out a challenge card to record trail visits. The 2019 challenge card lists a total of eight different trails within Berks County. The trails included vary in difficulty and terrain to provide new hiking experiences for participants.

“We are thrilled with the growth in participation for the 2019 Berks Trail Challenge,” said Desha Dickson, Reading Hospital Associate Vice President, Community Wellness. “This year we have five new trails on the challenge card for participants to explore. There are also two blank spots, so participants can visit their favorite local trails for the challenge.”

Completed challenge cards must be submitted by November 8 to be entered into the raffle prize drawing. Prize winners will be selected and announced via their registered email address during the week of November 11.

Challenge participants are encouraged to post photos and videos of their trail outings on their social media pages using the hashtag #Berkstrailchallenge.
