Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run of Berks County will host its second annual Sneaker Soiree fundraising event on October 16, 2019 at The Reading Public Museum, to celebrate and support the work of Girls on the Run of Berks County.  Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in 3rd to 8th grade. During the ten-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for an end-of-season celebratory 5K event.

Participation in the special event on October 16, 2019, is open to all men and women to celebrate the mission of Girls on the Run Berks and help support our efforts to empower girls and families across Berks County. All proceeds from the event will benefit the organization’s efforts to bring the program to as many Berks County girls as possible. As a non-profit organization serving girls across Berks County, Girls on the Run of Berks County relies on community support. Sneakers encouraged! For more information about the event and how to register, visit www.gotrberks.org. No registration at the door.

The inspiring evening will begin at 6:00 pm on October 16, 2019, at the Reading Public Museum, and will include an inspiring presentation by Devann Murphy. Devann was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in 1991 at the age of eleven. Treatment consisted of 18 months of chemo and a total hip joint removal, pelvis fusion, and her femur being replaced with a donor femur. Devann is a full-time crutch user, however she does not let that interfere with setting and achieving her goals! In 2014, she crutched the 26.2 mile route of the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, raising money for pediatric cancer research in the process. Devann’s goal is to help others realize there are no excuses and we are absolutely capable of overcoming and adapting to whatever is thrown our way!
