Sample, Beamesderfer Named Alvernia Players of the Week

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 14, 2019) – Football freshman Darrius Sample and Field Hockey senior Emma Beamesderfer were named Alvernia Players of the Week for their performance during the week of October 7 – 13.

Darrius Sample was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week after leading Alvernia to a 29-24 win over Lycoming College to claim Alvernia’s first-ever MAC Victory. Sample totaled 288 yards for the Golden Wolves; scoring three touchdowns. He threw for 178 yards (15-for-23) and ran for 110 yards yard. He threw for one touchdown and scored two more on the ground, including the go-ahead touchdown with 1:03 left in the game.

Emma Beamesderfer posted six saves and a shutout in a 1-1 week for the Golden Wolves. In a 1-0 setback on Wednesday against Susquehanna University, Beamesderfer made two saves against the Riverhawks. On Saturday. Beamesderfer made four saves against Albright College in a double overtime 1-0 win for Alvernia. She survived a fourth quarter that saw four penalty corners by the Lions to get Alvernia into overtime. She then made a save as time was expiring in the first overtime to keep it locked at 0-0 and force the second overtime, where Alvernia would go on to win on a successful penalty stroke by Madison Potthoff.
