The Penn Avenue Corridor in West Reading is set to come alive for the Holidays kicking off with Small Business Saturday on November 30, 2019. The West Reading Community Revitalization Foundation (WRCRF), Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) and Diamond Credit Union will be set up starting at 9am at the 6th & Penn Avenue. WRCRF will be handing out “Passports” and promotions for West Reading Businesses to the first hundred shoppers. Passports can be stamped at participating retailers and entered in a drawing to win a $500 gift card courtesy of Diamond Credit Union. Music by Tequila Mockingbird will energize shoppers from noon to 4pm on the 6th Avenue stage.
GRCA’s Small Business Coordinator, Jobany Bedoya, helped coordinate the #ShopSmall promotion with WRCRF. “This day is the biggest Holiday of the year for small businesses”, according to Bedoya. “Thank you on behalf of all small business owners in Berks for shopping local this Holiday season.”
In 2010, American Express launched the first Small Business Saturday, which takes place the day after Black Friday in response to the damage done to small businesses during the Recession in the late 2000s. The event adopted the slogan “#ShopSmall” and the movement took off from there. The #ShopSmall movement is certainly making an impact in West Reading. Melissa Jamula, owner, Curious on the Avenue, says their business consistently triples on Small Business Saturday.
During the Holiday season, Penn Avenue as a whole will offer extended hours, carriage rides, music, and ticketed events such as the annual “The Christmas Carol”.
