Sample Rookie of the Year, Carey and Brodie Earn All-MAC

Annville, Pa. (Nov. 19, 2019) – Freshman Darrius Sample was named MAC Rookie of the Year, and sophomore Malcolm Carey and freshman Myles Brodie were named to the 2019 All-MAC Football Team.

Darrius Sample, a quarterback, is Alvernia’s first Rookie or Player of the Year in program history. Running back Malcolm Carey earned First Team All-MAC honors for the second straight year, and Myles Brodie, a freshman defensive back, earned Second Team All-MAC honors.

Sample was a dual-threat for the Golden Wolves this year. He threw for 1,041 yards and ten touchdowns. He was also Alvernia’s second leading rusher, netting 632 yards on the ground and scoring seven touchdowns. He was sixth in the MAC in rushing yards, and finished 11th in the MAC with an average of 167 total offensive yards per game. Sample threw for a season-high 204 yards against FDU-Florham, and rushed for a season-high 147 yards against Wilkes. In Alvernia’s first MAC win in program history, Sample combined for three touchdowns and had over 300 yards of total offense. He earned MAC Player of the Week for his efforts against Lycoming.

Malcolm Carey led the MAC with 1,034 yards rushing over ten games. This was the second straight year Carey was a 1,000 yard rusher. Carey scored 14 rushing touchdowns for the Golden Wolves. Carey averaged 103.4 yards per game, and ran for a season-high 212 yards on 24 attempts against FDU-Florham. Carey had two three-touchdown games for the Golden Wolves, reaching the end zone three times against the University of New England and FDU-Florham. Carey broke out for a season-high 75 yard run in week three against Lebanon Valley College.

Myles Brodie finished his freshman campaign with a team-high five interceptions and eight broken up passes. He was second in the MAC in interceptions and passes defended per game, with an average of 1.30. Brodie also finished the season with 41 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for a loss. He had two-forced fumbles on the season as well. He averaged 0.8 turnovers per game for the Golden Wolves. In week two against the University of New England, Brodie was responsible for three takeaways – two interceptions and a forced fumble. He also came up with an interception against Lycoming in Alvernia’s first MAC win.

James Gillespie, a senior wide receiver from Widener, was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year. Michael Nobile, a sophomore defensive lineman from Delaware Valley, was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. Duke Greco was named MAC Coach of the Year.
