Reading Hospital Appoints John Franko, MD, as Chair, Family & Community Medicine

West Reading, Pa. – Reading Hospital has appointed John Franko, MD, as Chair, Family and Community Medicine, effective December 31, 2019. In this role, Dr. Franko will provide leadership of the Family and Community Medicine Department where he will foster and integrate family medicine services to meet the needs of the growing department and community. He will contribute to the development and improvement of primary care services and programs throughout Tower Health and develop the academic careers of existing providers while recruiting and mentoring outstanding new providers.

Dr. Franko brings more than 30 years of experience in family medicine practice and education. Most recently, he served as the Chair of Family Medicine, Senior Academic Chair of Primary Care, and Professor of Family Medicine for Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas HealthCare System) in North Carolina. He is also a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine for UNC Chapel Hill. Dr. Franko was recognized as a Top Doctor in North Carolina by The Waiting Room Magazine in 2019 and listed in Consumer Research Councils of America’s Guide to America’s Top Family Doctors in 2014.

Dr. Franko has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Departments of Family Medicine since 2017, having been a member since 2007. He has also served as the Chair of the Leading Change Curriculum Task Force 2 for the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine since 2013, having been a member since 1994. He is also a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Franko earned his bachelor’s degree from University of Notre Dame and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia. He completed a residency in family medicine at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
