Since 1992, award-winning ceramic sculptor Beverlee Lehr (American, b. Washington, DC, 1939) has exhibited her work in museum, college and art center shows primarily in south-central Pennsylvania. Her last solo was at the Suzanne H. Arnold Gallery at Lebanon Valley College in 2011. Her ceramic wall pieces are in many private and public collections including the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg and Lancaster Museum of Art.

Lehr is inspired by the shapes of the human body, the land and geometry. To obtain her unique colors, she formulates all her own clay and glazes and fires with propane in an atmosphere with reduced oxygen—a process known as reduction-firing.

Raised in Silver Spring, Md., Lehr was nine when her father, a draftsman, died and her mother took work as a research technician for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. After earning a bachelor’s degree in science at Trinity College in Washington, D.C., Lehr worked as a chemist at the National Heart Institute in Bethesda, Md. She married and became a stay-at-home mom, periodically taking art classes. After moving to south-central Pennsylvania, she continued art studies at Millersville University, earning a bachelor’s degree, and studied clay with John Ground.

In 1973 Lehr began making functional pottery which she sold at craft shows. She studied ceramics with Robert Turner in 1998 at the Penland School of Crafts. By 1979 she was experi- menting with sculptural forms and took workshops with ceramists Bill Daley and Lisbeth Stuart.

Lehr presented and discussed her work on the NAP TV series New Arts Alive in 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_jhIKJQuuE&list=PLjuI03soTP4GvN6WIK1SyeqwB7i-3kxYn&index=4&t=0s
