READING, PA – The Junior League of Reading, PA, Inc. announces its 9th Annual Young Women’s Summit to be held on February 21st and 22nd, February 29th and March 1st at the Second Street Learning Center, 430 North Second Street, Reading, PA 19601. The Young Women’s Summit is a leadership development and civic engagement forum for girls enrolled in four Reading School District middle schools, as well as Muhlenberg Middle School. The purpose of the Summit is to engage a diverse group of 6th and 7th grade girls in a meaningful dialogue to expand their developmental assets, to cultivate their leadership skills, and to empower them to make a difference in their community through civic engagement and service learning projects. The program is free for all participants.

The Summit is a critical component of the Junior League of Reading’s Youth Empowerment initiative that seeks to create, improve, and expand the resources and opportunities available to youth for their growth, development and overall welfare, so they can become stewards of leadership in their communities.

Over the next two weekends, the members of the Junior League will work with approximately 65 girls on various activities focusing on self-awareness, emotions, conflict resolution, team building, stress management, confidence, and self-esteem. The attendees will apply all strengths and skills learned throughout the weekends to a one of five service learning projects organized by members of the Junior League in partnership with community non-profits. This year’s projects will include dog and cat toys for the Animal Rescue League, reusable water bottles for Family Promise, magic reading carpets for the Opportunity House Child Care Center, canvas toiletry bags for Safe Berks, and dinner-in-a-jar for Veterans Making a Difference. The Summit participants will then have the opportunity to present their projects to a representative from each non-profit organization.
