KU Student Brings Spotlight to LGBTQ+ Stories through Writing Wrongs Program

From Kutztown University

Feb 28, 2020

KUTZTOWN, PA – Kutztown University senior Jamilee Hoffman of Chalfont, Pa., was one of 15 students from across the region selected to participate in the Writing Wrongs program for 2019. She served as one of the staff social media managers during the program, which partnered with the LGBT Center of Greater Reading to create a project focused on the stories and challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

A graduate of Central Bucks South High School, Hoffman is a communication studies major and Dean’s List student. Interested in specializing in social media management, Hoffman became interested in the Writing Wrongs project due to her interest in sharing other’s experiences, specifically with issues surrounding racial equality, gender equality, women’s and LGBTQ+ rights.

“The LGBTQ+ community needs to be talked about more so that others who are struggling can see that exposure of the community is normal,” Hoffman said. “It needs to be a part of everyone’s everyday lives so it isn’t seen as something different or odd. I want to be a part of creating more exposure and love for the community.”

Writing Wrongs is a yearly community journalism program with the mission to generate awareness and promote understanding of various social issues through the publication of a book created entirely by student multimedia journalists. College students from across Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Ney York commit their Labor Day breaks to voluntarily immerse themselves in a relevant social issue.

The 2019 project, titled Outgrowing, along with previous Writing Wrongs book projects, are available now through most online booksellers. Previous projects include Strength in Vulnerability: Reclaimed Voices of Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (2018), Untold, Unseen, Unheard: Perspectives on Immigration (2017) and Addiction: Stories of Hope (2016). All proceeds from the book sales support the Writing Wrongs program and related activities.
