Customers Bank Donates $25,000 to RACC Student Emergency Assistance Fund

Reading Area Community College, with the help of a generous donation of $25,000 from Customers Bank, has established the Emergency Student Assistance Fund to support the unexpected costs due to the extraordinary circumstances of the global COVID-19 outbreak. Current students will be able to apply for these donated funds.

“Even during these uncertain times, what is best for the students is at the center of every decision we make,” says Dr. Susan Looney, RACC president. “That is why we prioritized getting funding out the door quickly to students who need it most. We don’t want unmet financial needs due to the coronavirus to derail their learning and ultimately their goal of completion.”

The Student Emergency Assistance Fund provides support to students who encounter obstacles to completion. Eligible students receive funds to help overcome extraordinary financial hardships pertaining to childcare, housing, transportation, utilities, medical expenses and college course required supplies.

Customers Bank’s contribution of $25,000, combined with money raised by the Foundation for RACC places the fund at over $37,000. Thus far, 110 requests have been granted. Of the assistance provided, most allocations were for computer hardware and connectivity, housing and utilities. Requests are capped at $500 annually and require approval of the dean of students and the dean of instruction. Fundraising continues with a goal of being ready to support students in the fall, 2020 semester as well.
