Community Groups Unite for Virtual Workshop Against Hate

Wyomissing, PA —The Jewish Federation of Reading, LGBT Center of Greater Reading and Reading branch of NAACP, along with other community partners, invite the public to participate in a virtual workshop against hate on Tuesday, June 9 at 7 p.m. Pre-registration is required: https://adl.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMucOitqzwtH9ZpTQYmkFxY_H5JGg92Zjas?fbclid=IwAR0CVPB0IQ9uLX8RArUuej_vngWr0UA9pQ78OgQvTjpid5Y3HBSGH1em_EU

Community leaders in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of Philadelphia will lead a virtual workshop for the public to inform about the state of hate in Pennsylvania and Berks County. In addition to learning the symbols and language used by hate groups the workshop will provide concrete steps we can all take to stop hate in our community. Specific reporting protocols will also be discussed. Following the workshop participants will receive online resources from the ADL and other civic organizations for further learning.

Hate, online and in person, has no place in our community and we encourage the public to call out hate wherever we see it, regardless of who is being targeted. Two-hundred and forty-four years after our country’s founding we are reminded that racism, discrimination, and bias persist in dangerous and even lethal ways in this country.  Bias unchecked by action festers; silence is complicity.  We must be vigilant against hate in whatever form it takes.

Community partners include Centro Hispano, the Reading branch of NAACP, the Greater Reading Unity Coalition, Senator Judy Schwank, Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks and LGBT Center of Greater Reading. Other religious leaders and community partners will also be participating.

ADL is a leading anti-hate organization and is a global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education and fighting hate online, ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate.

The Jewish Federation of Reading is the planning, coordinating and fundraising arm of the Jewish community. The Federation raises and allocates funds with The Jewish Federations of North America’s collective efforts in support of many vital national and international Jewish organizations.

The LGBT Center of Greater Reading creates, administers, and provides services, advocacy, and support to the Greater Reading LGBTQ+ community, including our allies, with the goal that all may live a life of fulfillment, inclusion and celebration.

The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. The local chapter is dedicated to social justice and equality for all people and making a difference in our local community right here in Reading and Berks County, PA.

Given the increased number of bias-motivated incidents including physical harassment and violence, the Greater Reading Unity Coalition (GRUC) aims to work with our community schools and social centers to promote respect, inclusiveness and civility. By promoting equality and diversity, we hope to eliminate bullying, vandalism, assault and all other forms of expressions and bigotry. GRUC is a coalition of  the Jewish Federation of Reading, Reading Centro Hispano, the  Islamic Center of Reading, the NAACP, the LGBT community and several concerned citizens.
