Berks Encore is very excited to announce a new emergency program that will provide supplemental meals for over 650 customers receiving Meals on Wheels. Funding has been secured through Meals on Wheels America, United Way and an anonymous local donor to provide 10 additional meals for each home delivered consumer currently receiving meals on wheels from Berks Encore.
Beginning Monday June 8 and for the next two weeks, under the guidance of Chef Tim Twiford, Redner’s professional chef, meals will be packed at the Berks Encore Reading Center and delivered cold to clients to be stored in the refrigerator or freezer for the consumer to use at their discretion.
LuAnn Oatman, president/CEO of Berks Encore announced, “This is a new project for us. We are very excited to be able to deliver a tasty menu of supplemental meals provided by a professional chef, Chef Tim, and his staff at Redner’s Markets.”
Each consumer will receive 5 extra meals per week for the next two weeks. The regular daily meal will be delivered as normally scheduled and a second group of volunteers will deliver the “bonus meals”. Chef Tim will oversee assembly and packing of the meals. All food will be pre-cooked and arrive in refrigerated pans transported to Berks Encore in a Redner’s refrigerated box truck to maintain the food temperature for food safety. All meals will be labeled as to the contents.
Examples of the entrees provided for week one are: ham steak, stuffed shells and rotisserie chicken.
Meals on Wheels delivers a noon day meal every Monday through Friday. This supplemental food project will run from June 8-June 19 and will provide extra meals to the home delivery customer that can be consumed as needed.
