Summer Camp is on at the Yocum Institute

2020 Yocum Institute Summer Camps Program Running June 22, 2020 through August 21,2020

Each year, the Yocum Institute for Arts Education offers their Summer Arts Camps for kids ages 2-17. This summer may look a little different, but Yocum still plans on having an amazing summer camp program. Their program features unique, themed camps that allow campers to explore, create, innovate and problem solve while growing their critical thinking skills and making new friends. For young campers, ages 2-3, Yocum offers early childhood half-day Picturebook Preschool Camps, campers ages 3-12 can participate in Yocum’s themed half- or full-day, week-long Multi-Arts Camps or children and teens ages 8-17 can try their hand at performing in theater performance camps and specialty workshops. Whether it’s the Puppet Play Camp (June 29-July 3), Kids Onstage: Making a Musical (July 27-31), Claymation and Stop Motion Magic Camp (August 3-7), or the YouTube Shorts Camp (August 17-21) there is something for everyone.

Health and Safety Procedures: The safety of their campers and staff are top priority. In alignment with CDC, State of Pennsylvania, and American Camp Association (ACA), the Yocum Institute is implementing safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Between the thorough cleanings by their nightly service, Yocum will also have staff dedicated to frequently cleaning and disinfecting high touch-point surfaces throughout each day. Staff are required to wear a mask. Masks are voluntary for those ages 15 and under. Staff are screened daily for signs and symptoms of Covid-19 using the CDC checklist before they may enter the program. Class sizes will be limited based on studio size to maintain CDC recommended social distancing and there will be no shared materials or surfaces without proper CDC recommended cleaning. Groups will be with the same children for the duration of the camp. For children 6+ parents will be asked to drop-off without entering the building.

Picturebook Preschool Camps (Ages 2-3): For young campers, ages 2-3, the Yocum Institute offers their early childhood half-day Picturebook Preschool Camps, which run daily from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Each week, children will explore a beloved children’s book through theater, dance, visual art, and music. What can a little artist create as they explore color in The Day The Crayons Quit Preschool Camp (July 13-17), and dance to Giraffe’s Can’t Dance Preschool Camp (July 27-31).

Multi Arts Camps (ages 3-12): Campers ages 3-12 can participate in Yocum’s themed week-long Multi-Arts Camps. Campers work with professional teaching artists as they discover endless ways to design, construct, and perform with puppets during Puppet Play Camp (June 29-July 3), build forts out of found materials and construct musical numbers during Construction Zone Camp (July 13-17), or improvise and create skits for a video project during the popular YouTube Shorts Camp (August 17-21). Campers have the choice to explore a half-day session or join Yocum for a full-day of adventure. Full Day Camps run 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM and Half Day Camps run 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM.

Specialty and Performance Camps (ages 8-17): Children and teens ages 8-17 can try their hand at performing in theater performance camps and specialty workshops. These camps range in length (1-3 weeks) and many result in performances being held at the Yocum Institute’s Schumo Theater. These workshops are perfect for a pre-teen and teenage camper.

A large feature of Yocum Institute’s Summer Arts Camps is the three-week performance camp Broadway Jr. Students participating in Broadway Jr will train in dance, voice, and acting. The three-week course will culminate in a fully staged production of Into The Woods Jr. in Yocum Institute’s Schumo Theater, under the direction of Wendy Bable, and other Yocum Institute theater professionals. Performances of Into The Woods Jr. are July 24-26, showtimes will be determined at a later date.
