Shillington Grocery Outlet (located at 4200 Shillington Plaza, Shillington, PA 19607) is holding their annual Independence from Hunger fundraising event to benefit Keystone Military Families and the Mifflin Community Food Ministry.

From July 1 to July 31, shoppers at Shillington Grocery Outlet can “donate for free” by donating $5 to the fundraiser and receive a $5 coupon for their next shopping trip. They can also purchase and donate prepared bags of food.

The purpose of the fundraiser is to fight summertime hunger for local children and families. “People ask ‘Why in the summer?’” Fayez Abboud, owner of Shillington Grocery Outlet, said. “With school out for the summer, it is an important time for children with food insecurities, and the agencies that support them when their stock is low, to have some help from the community.”

All donations will go directly to Keystone Military Families, a food pantry and resource network for struggling military families in Pennsylvania, and Mifflin Community Food Ministry, a non-profit food pantry and outreach corporation for families in need in the Governor Mifflin area.

Shillington Grocery Outlet has worked with the two organizations for over 3 years on previous fundraisers. Last year, Independence from Hunger raised over $9,000, and the Outlet is looking to double its goal this year.
