Jul 08, 2020

Berks Women’s History Alliance Cancels Commemorative Dinner Celebrating the 100th Year Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, will continue with alternate event and continued community education.

The Berks Women’s History Alliance (BWHA) has announced the nonpartisan Berks Suffrage 2020 Centennial Dinner to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of women achieving the right to vote in America has been canceled. The event, scheduled for Women’s Equality Day, August 26, 2020, was canceled due to concerns regarding the health and safety of attendees during the current COVID-19 crisis.

“The fight for the vote lasted 72 years,” said Penny Guido, one of the leaders of the Berks Women’s History Alliance. “We shall be as persistent in celebrating the 100 year anniversary of their ultimate achievement.” The group is planning an alternate celebration for August 26 and will announce additional information once the details are finalized.

BWHA will continue its efforts to create and disseminate educational information about the women’s suffrage movement and its leaders. Plans include creating a video featuring local historical reenactors portraying prominent suffragists telling the story of the long battle to win the right for women to vote. The video also will be available to all Berks County schools and libraries. Additionally, the group will continue to maintain its website, www.berkssuffrage2020centennial.org, which serves as a clearinghouse for information about the anniversary.
