Arrest in Burglary/Shot Fired at Reading Police Officer

On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at approximately 0145 hours, the Reading Police Department responded to a report of a burglar alarm at Feeney Funeral Home located at 625 North 4th Street Reading, PA.

As the responding officer was investigating the burglar alarm, he noticed that the basement lights were illuminated. The officer checked the door leading to the basement, and as he was doing so, the suspect fired a shot through a glass door, nearly striking the officer. It was determined through the investigation that a burglary had occurred within Feeney Funeral Home. The suspect fled the scene and was not captured on June 17, 2020. As the department reported in previous media releases related to this incident, our personnel have been engaged in an ongoing and active investigation to identify the suspect.

On Thursday, July 16, 2020, at approximately 7:40 pm, Reading Police conducted a traffic stop on a suspected stolen vehicle in the 100 block of North 3rd St. The vehicle was confirmed as stolen, and it was operated by Raphael Enrique Perez who was taken into custody. Perez was charged with receiving stolen property, firearms violations, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without a license.

Investigators from the Reading Police Department conducted a follow-up on the stolen vehicle investigation, which lead them to Tully Lane in Bern Township, Berks County, PA. This followup uncovered the apparent homicide of Dennis Fink, which is currently being investigated by the Berks County District Attorney’s Office and the Bern Township Police Department.

As a result of the investigation, it was determined that Raphael Perez was the male who committed the burglary at Feeney Funeral Home and fired a shot at the responding officer on June 17, 2020. Raphael has been charged with criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, possessing an instrument of crime, burglary, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking, and receiving stolen property. Perez is currently in Berks County Prison on these charges.
