DUNCANSVILLE – At the request of Senator Judy Ward (R-Blair/Cumberland/Franklin/Fulton/Huntingdon), the Senate Majority Policy Committee will discuss the challenges facing rural pharmacists during an upcoming workshop on September 14.

“Rural areas like mine rely heavily on the local pharmacist to assist in the healthcare needs of the community. Without them the long-term health of rural Pennsylvanians will suffer,” said Senator Ward. “I appreciate the opportunity to dive deeper into this matter to understand their obstacles and ensure they remain viable well into the future.”

In addition to struggles caused by COVID-19, rural pharmacies face a series of uphill challenges including inadequate reimbursement rates, competition from mail-order companies, difficulties with state regulations and laws hindering scope of practice.

“Our rural pharmacists are struggling and we’re going to discuss how to help them,” said Majority Policy Committee Chair Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks). “I commend Senator Judy Ward for her leadership on this issue and I look forward to the committee assisting our rural pharmacists and the communities that they serve.”

The workshop will take place on Monday, September 14 at 1:00 p.m. The public is invited to watch the event live on the Majority Policy Committee’s website. at http://policy.pasenategop.com.
