KUTZTOWN, PA – The National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program has awarded Kutztown University a $1 million grant to fund the university’s new Emerging Mathematics and Computer Science (EMACS) Scholars Program, which will recruit and support talented mathematics, computer science and information technology students with demonstrated financial need. This program will also generate new knowledge on recruitment, retention and student success, which will be circulated through publications and presentations.
Kutztown University’s new EMACS Scholars Program will provide scholarships to students who are interested in pursuing their bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science or information technology. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years and is awarded to students who are academically-talented with demonstrated financial need. Coupled with Pell grants and other financial support, this scholarship will help students finish their undergraduate degree at Kutztown University at minimal cost.
In addition to scholarships, the new EMACS Scholars Program will also provide multidimensional support as students progress through their academic programs, such as peer-tutoring, mentorship, research and internship opportunities, and career and graduate school preparation. Students from surrounding municipalities and nearby regional centers such as Reading, Allentown, Philadelphia who intend to pursue a career in mathematics, computer science or information technology are likely beneficiaries of this new initiative at Kutztown University.
The NSF’s S-STEM program addresses the need for a high-quality STEM workforce and for promoting success of academically-talented students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing associate, baccalaureate or graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The five-year grant amounts to $999,758. The first cohort of students are expected to enroll in Fall 2021.
