Berks Humane welcomes first Canine Behavior Specialist, Ellie Scheurich

Berks Humane welcomes first Canine Behavior Specialist, Ellie Scheurich

Ellie Scheurich is our full-time Canine Behavior Specialist for Berks and Lancaster shelters. She started her journey in animal welfare 9 years ago when her family started fostering dogs for the Humane League of Lancaster County. For the last 5 years Ellie worked as an Animal Care Technician for the Humane League of Lancaster where she learned all of the necessary skills to care for animals in the shelter, however canine behavior became Ellie’s career focus.

Ellie’s canine behavior training started off with several Karen Pryor classes on clicker training and shelter behavior/enrichment. She then received a grant through VCA and was able to attend the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultant’s course on Shelter Dog Behavior Mentorship with Trish McMillan. After completing the course she went on to receive her Shelter Behavior Affiliation with the IAABC. After realizing she wanted to pursue an even deeper understanding of canine aggression, Ellie attended Michael Shikashio’s Master Aggression Course, and now specializes in dealing with aggression. This September Ellie took the test to obtain accreditation for CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed) and found out in October 2020 that she PASSED. Ellie will continue to expand her knowledge and obtain additional accreditations in the field.

Ellie’s ultimate goal with this position is to not only help the dogs in our care, but to also prevent dogs being surrendered and hopes to do this by educating the owners and the community on owning behaviorally challenged dogs. Ellie’s significant other also works in the shelter world and loves fostering behavior cases, which has resulted in her family being owned by two knuckleheads, a German Shepherd, and a Heinz 57.

This new exciting position was created to oversee canine enrichment, behavior, and counseling in order to meet the physical and behavior needs of all canines within Humane Pennsylvania shelters.

Please join Humane Pennsylvania in welcoming Ellie into this new position!
